Obituary

Steding, William M.

Mr. William M. Steding, age 86, of Syracuse, NY, went to be with our Lord Friday November 8, 2019. Surviving are his wife of 52 years Nancy Steding (Manuel), his children: MaryLou (Ed) Mills, Roberta Welch, William (Kate) M. Steding II, Shelley (Ron) Sadler and Pam (John) Parsons. He is survived by 14 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son William D. Carlton (Rusty).

He drove double-bottom tractor trailers in the Northeast for forty two years, retiring from UPS in 1996. He was a member of the Pennellville United Methodist Church, NY; an active member of the Zephyrhills Moose Lodge #2276 and a retired member of the Teamsters Local 317 in New York.

His hobbies included boating, motorcycling, and in his younger years, drag racing. He always loved the water and as a teenager in the 1940s he would spend many a summer weekend giving tours on Oneida Lake in his classic wooden boat. In 2019, the Syracuse, NY Post Standard, wrote a story about the legalization of drag racing in 1959 at the NYS Fairgrounds. The big winner of that eventful day, the "Top Eliminator" with the fastest speed, was William Steding.

He was an avid worker and could always be found tinkering in the garage or starting a new project. With his quick wit and sense of humor, he made friends wherever he went. A memorial service will be held later this spring at the Pennellville United Methodist Church, New York.

Donations may be made to the "First United Methodist Church" of Dade City or the American Lung Association.
