Sophia "Sophie" (Goeden) Richter, age 102, of San Antonio, FL, passed away on March 19, 2024, at her home under the loving care of her family and Gulfside Hospice.
Sophie was born on May 25, 1921, on the family farm near Wadena, MN, the third of seven children, to Joseph A. and Catherine (Erhardt) Goeden. She graduated from Wadena High School in 1939 and St. Cloud Business School in 1940. She worked as a bookkeeper until her mothers death in 1941, when she helped care for her siblings. Sophie was married to Raymond J. Richter on June 1, 1943, at St. Anns Catholic Church in Wadena, and together they had 13 children. After dairy farming near Wadena, they moved to San Antonio, FL in 1955, where they were involved in farming and construction.
Sophie was a busy mother and homemaker. She was a parishioner of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church of San Antonio, and a member of the St. Anthony Catholic Womens Club. She was also active in the Day-Z Garden Club, Red Hats, and the Leading Ladies. Sophie was an avid card player, especially bridge (you never messed with Mom on her bridge day). She also enjoyed quilting, crocheting, crafts, gardening, and keeping current with politics. Sophie was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grand mother, and great-great grandmother. For many years she was the hostess of the family holiday gatherings, which were very lively. She enjoyed being with her family and friends.
Sophie is survived by her children: Patricia (Donald) Samec, Vancouver, WA; Janice (Bernard) Schelonka, Rochester, MN; Donna (Michael) Brown, North Liberty, IA; Joan (Peter) Schatzel, St. Petersburg, FL; David Richter, San Antonio, FL; Peter (Shelley) Richter, San Antonio, FL; Kathy Larsen, Tampa/San Antonio, FL; John (Debbie) Richter, San Antonio, FL; Lisa Brown, Tampa, FL; Frank (Patty) Richter, Dade City, FL; Mark (Sandy) Richter, St. Augustine, FL; sister-in-law Theresa Goeden; brother-in-law, Jack (Judy) Richter; sister-in-law Carolyn Richter; 28 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild and many nieces and nephews.
Sophie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 57 years, Raymond Richter; son and daughter in-law, Thomas (Carol) Richter; daughter Mary Sue Richter; son-in-law Doug Larsen; brothers: Charles (Juanita) Goeden; Joseph (Lorraine) Goeden; Leo Goeden; sisters: Catherine (Leonard) McGrane; Rosemary (Mark) Lorentz; Margaret (Virgil) Wellner.
There will be a Rosary starting at 9:30, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 on Saturday, April 6, 2024, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, in San Antonio, FL. Burial will follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery.
The family would like to thank Gulfside Hospice for their compassionate care, especially Solanyi, Amy, and Yuliana.
