Sandra Sue Goodwin
July 21, 1957 - April 9, 2023
Sandy Goodwin, age 65, of Dade City, Florida passed away peacefully on Easter Sunday, April 9, 2023 surrounded by loving family members after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Sandy was born on July 21,1957 in Breda, Iowa to Chet and Lucinda Ocken. She was the youngest of five children. She graduated from Dowling High School in Des Moines, Iowa in 1975 where she was a Stepperatte and marched in the presidential parade for Richard Nixon in Washington, DC.
She was introduced to future husband, Patrick Goodwin, by her lifelong best friend, Sarah Stegall-Krieger. Pat and Sandy were married on June 17, 1978. They later moved to Overland Park, Kansas where they had their two children, Matthew in 1982 and Ashley in 1984. Pats career took them to Sunrise, Florida in 1987. Sandy spent the next 24 years working as a legal secretary for Charles Butman, real estate attorney. Throughout these years, Sandy treasured her time as a mother and was very involved with her childrens countless swim meets, dance recitals, and school functions. Some cherished memories during these years were cross country vacations to the Midwest to visit family and friends, dinners with extended family at her sisters home, and priceless Christmas traditions.
In 2010, Pat and Sandy moved to Dade City, Florida to be near their children who had both relocated to Tampa, Florida. Over the next few years, Pat and Sandy were blessed with the arrival of four beautiful grandchildren. As a retiree in Dade City, Sandy found herself involved in many new activities such as Jazzercise, books clubs, mahjong, lunches with new friends, and knitting blankets for grandchildren and State Fair winning entries. Sandy continued to devote her time to her family by hosting "Goodwin Family Fun Days" (GFFD), sleepovers with grandchildren, and attending the next generations extracurricular activities.
Sandy is a woman who will always be remembered as having a kind and loving heart. She was a friend to all, a woman of faith, and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She loved all things Christmas and would spend countless hours decorating her home for all to enjoy. Sandy was famous for her annual Christmas cookies. She would begin planning in July, baking in October, and finish with almost 200 dozen cookies that close friends would help her turn into beautifully decorated platters to share with others. Next to the love of her family, Sandy had a lifelong affection for her many Golden Retrievers. Each one she loved like a child with her Sadie Sue laying at her side to the moment of her passing.
Sandy is survived by her loving husband of 45 years, Patrick Goodwin of Dade City, FL; her children Matthew (Jennifer) Goodwin of Tampa, FL and Ashley (Baker) Mabry of Lutz, FL; grandchildren McKenna and Kendall Mabry of Lutz, FL and Lucas and Ryan Goodwin of Tampa, FL; brother, Jerry (Virginia) Ocken of Council Bluffs, IA; sister, Diane (Larry) Wilberding of Wesley Chapel, FL; sister, Elaine Haubrich of Council Bluffs, IA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Sandy is preceded in death by her parents Chet and Lucinda Ocken; sister, Katie Ocken; and brother-in-law, Larry Haubrich.
