Sally Evelyn Fernald left us on May 11, 2023 to make the journey to her next, heavenly, life. She was born Sally Evelyn Johnston on August 31, 1945 to Talbot and Constance Johnston then of Scarborough Maine, moving soon after with her parents and older brothers to Talbot's hometown of Washington, Maine. One of a family of six children, she was raised on a farm once owned by her great-grandfather.
Sally was born a premature baby during lean years because of the war, learned early to use her strength to fortify herself as she helped others in their life struggles. She was her mother's helper with three younger siblings; and she helped raise eleven of her stepchildren as well as her own three. Her life was devoted to caring for family and friends.
Her early working life was spent as an office worker for the State of Maine and in a variety of businesses in Augusta and Portland, as she was proficient in typing and stenography. After raising children, she worked many years for the Swedenborgian summer camp in Fryeburg, Maine, cooking and baking which all who knew her say was the best and healthiest food.
A faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she took on the leadership role of helping families survive and thrive. She was brought into the church by her first husband, Robert Riley, the father of her children, they were divorced in the spring of 1988. After the divorce Sally met and married William Fernald in August of 1988 and their marriage was sealed in the Washington, D.C. temple in 1989.
Her adulthood was lived many years in Hiram, Maine. In later years, she and Bill moved to Zephyrhills, Florida to be near her mother, whom she would spend winters caring for until her full time return to Maine.
Sally was predeceased by her parents and three of her stepchildren: Wayne Riley, Kevin Riley, and Malcolm Fernald; and brother-in-law Michael Kukachka.
She is survived by her children Patricia Riley-Odone her husband Aric, Sean Riley and Cass Riley of Sherman Oaks California, Jason Riley of Bath, Maine, David and Ramona Riley of Tucson, Arizona, Susan Riley of Tucson Arizona, Terri Riley and Susan of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Darryll Fernald and Amy Bratskier of Boston, Massachusetts, Moira and Shane Henri of Caldwell, Idaho, Sarah Fernald of Tampa, Florida, Eileen and Eric Cowen of Vancouver, Washington, Jacob and Shanna Fernald of Portland, Maine.
Her siblings all survive her: Talbot William Jr. and Lesley Johnston, Ralph and Elaine Johnston, Patricia Kukachka, Martha Johnston-Nash and Lawrence Nash, and Thomas and Debbie Johnston.
Grandchildren surviving and missing her are: Riley Smith and Addison Smith, of Brunswick, Maine, Elinor Riley and Rowan Riley of Bath, Maine, Connor Riley of Sebago, Maine, Shanna Simmons, Fairbanks, Alaska, Brenton Riley of Tucson, Arizona, Brenda Rigby, Makayla Henrie, Laura Henrie, John Henrie and Jakob Henrie of Caldwell, Idaho, Abraham Cowen, Marley Cowen and Bridget Cowen of Vancouver, Washington, Clara Fernald of Boston, Massachusetts. Brenna Odone, Logan Odone. Other surviving family includes great-grandchildren Axel Rigby, Jeremiah Rigby, Lillianna Rigby, of Caldwell, Idaho, and Viviane Riley of Tucson, Arizona. There are also many adoring nieces and nephews and cousins; her church family; and special Aunt Lorraine.
Services include a memorial in Zephyrhills on June 3; a memorial in Maine on July 8th, to be announced; and a graveside service at Forest City Cemetery in South Portland, Maine in early July 2023.
