IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Ronald John
Ingersoll
November 26, 1936 – December 15, 2022
INGERSOLL, Ronald John, age 86, transitioned to his Heavenly home on Thursday, December 15, 2022. Ronald (Ron) was born in Cortland, NY on November 26, 1936, to Belford Adelbert Ingersoll and Alice Eleanor "Terrell" Ingersoll.
Ron is survived by his wife of 45 years, Doris Mae Ingersoll; his daughters, Paige Marie Ramsey-Hamacher and Krista Lee Ramsey; and his granddaughter, Kylie Maerie Hamacher.
Ron was an only child. He was preceded in death by his parents Belford & Alice Ingersoll; his first wife, Carrol Alice "Wadsworth" Ingersoll; and his son, William John Ingersoll.
Ron earned his masters and Ph.D. from Cornell University in Physical Biology, and immediately after graduation, began teaching in the Science department at Thiel College in Greenville, Pennsylvania. The President asked him to step in and start working with the Admissions area and Stuart Weiner during his time at Thiel, and that is where his love of Enrollment Management began. He met Dori "Stewart" Ramsey at Thiel College. Dori and Ron moved to St. Petersburg, FL for a year where he was Vice President for Enrollment at Eckerd College and was a consultant for Stuart Weiner there. He and Dori moved then to Chicago, Illinois with Stuart Weiner and Associates and from there partnered/owned that company and/or consulted individually in Higher Education Enrollment Management from 1975 on. He authored one book (1988) The Enrollment Problem and co-authored another with Dori and other Student Success professionals (2012) Strategic Enrollment Management: Transforming Higher Education.
Ron and Dori worked with countless Admissions, Enrollment, and Student Success professionals. They conducted workshops, presented at many national conferences, and consulted with Universities, Colleges, and Community Colleges around the country.
Ron was one of the pioneers in the discipline, models, and practice of Strategic Enrollment Management in higher education and consulting firms across the United States. His models and expertise have been widely adopted and expanded and continue to be the foundation for higher education enrollment management. During his career (and up to this year,) Ron has impacted student success at so many institutions, and over the years, he and Dori mentored many of those Enrollment Management leaders.
The "magic" in Rons mentorship was his passion for learning and teaching, and his natural ability to truly engage with people and see their potential. He had a gift for challenging people to dig deeper, think bigger, and believe in themselves and the process. He was so focused on helping people be great at the work of higher education, he continually crafted, updated, and refined successful models for both student success and teaching biology. He was an accomplished academic and author, a stellar professor, and a coach of university administrators at the highest level. Yet, he brought the same passion to each professional engagement whether advising university presidents or coaching the teams on the front lines of student recruitment.
Aside from being known as Ron the Pioneer of Enrollment Management, he was Ron the Husband, Father, and Grandfather to his four girls. He was known by us for his quick wit, his love of music, and his search for connections with and a better understanding of the people he loved most and others around him. A few fond memories were the sneaky "Grinch" grin he would make when a hiccup sounded (he was ready to scare the hiccups away), and the marching band music he would play at top volume at any time of day. He was always there when it counted most, ready to try to fix things the way he knew how. Though his way of showing love was not as apparent in later years, he loved and was fiercely proud of, his four girls. He was an observer. Ron loved listening to and watching his girls rehearsing, reading Kristas poetry, or watching his daughter, Paige, cook dinner. His last observation at home was of watching his wife, daughters, and granddaughter decorate the year-round tree for Christmas. He was loved by and will be missed by his four girls.
Ron will be cremated at Hodges Family Funeral Home in Dade City, Florida. A celebration of life service will be held at Community United Methodist Church in San Antonio, Florida, on January 7, 2023, at 10 am.
