Obituary for Roger Courtney Beattie, Sr.

On May 6, 2023, Roger Courtney Beattie Sr, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend passed away peacefully at the age of 89 in Dade City, Florida. Roger was born to James and Dorcas Beattie on March 5, 1934 in Avon, Massachusetts.

Roger served honorably as a Radio Telephone Operator in the U.S. Navy from 1951-1955. He married his wife Shirley on June 28, 1972. He worked primarily as a machinist during his working life, but also cooked and worked as a security guard. The family moved from New York to Virginia, and then to Florida in1989 where he worked several jobs until he retired in 1996.

Roger enjoyed traveling with Shirley in retirement and was able to visit almost all the states in the U.S. Over the many years, he dearly loved his dogs Blackie, Freckles, Fluffy, Snickers and Shina. He had a quick-witted sense of humor, enjoyed wordplay and puns, and was an avid reader. Everyone who knew him will cherish the memories they had together and hold them close to their hearts.

Roger was preceded in death by his father, James, his mother, Dorcas, and his sister, Mildred. He is survived by his wife, Shirley, his children, Roger Jr, Bradley and Virginia, his sister Priscilla, his grandchildren Matthew, Jeffery, Derek, Bobby, Megan, Adam and Vincent, and his nephews and nieces, along with several great-grandchildren.

Roger will be interred with military honors at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL. A memorial service for family and friends will be at Hodges Family Funeral Home, 36327 State Road 54, Zephyrhills, FL 33541, on Monday, May 22, 2023 at 3:00PM.
