After fighting the good fight and running the good race, Philip R. English, Sr. (Sarge), 85, resident of Zephyrhills, FL went to Heaven on Saturday, September 10, 2016 from Zephyrhills Health and Rehabilitation Center, Zephyrhills, FL. The son of Coleman English and Lizzie Lacy, who have preceded him, Sarge was born in Carnegie, OK on 5/29/1931. He was one of 6 children, all of whom have preceded him. Sarge graduated from Carnegie High School, and upon graduation, enlisted in the U.S. Air Force of which he was a proud member for 21 years. Sarge married his wife of 64 years, Anita M (Drake) on 12/22/1950 at Witchita Falls, TX. Anita went to be with the Lord on 1/28/2015. Following his Air Force career, Sarge had three other careers: he owned a Sunoco Gas Station in Little Heaven, DE, was the Captain of a fuel oil tanker out of the Philadelphia, PA harbor, and was the owner and Captain of a charter boat, the Anita M., out of Bowers Beach, DE. Sarge was a fantastic fast-pitch softball pitcher, and played on many teams. Later on, he was a football coach and a referee for intramural basketball games. He loved to bowl. Along with his wife, Anita, he volunteered for several years at Slam Dunk to the Beach, high school basketball tournaments at Cape Henlopen High School, Lewes, DE. In his last years Sarge loved serving the Lord through his work with the Gideons and with the Primetimers of the First Baptist Church of Dade City. He loved to sing, going on trips and potluck dinners with the Primetimers, as well as Wednesday visitations. He fondly enjoyed his times at the Dade City Nutrition Center, especially on Fridays for BINGO. Survivors include his children, Ranita Ann Voellm and her husband Eric Voellm of Coxsackie, NY; Klota Jo Funds and her husband Steve Funds of Clermont, FL; Philip Ray English, Jr. and his favorite daughter in law, Terri English of Papillion NB; Doc Watson and his wife Deborah of Crest View, FL. His Grandchildren, Jennifer Renee Grabiec (Adam), of Charlotte, NC; Daryl Steven Funds (Rebecca) of Lakeland, FL; Nicholas James Voellm of Ravena, NY; Nathaniel Mark Voellm of Berkeley, CA; Patrick, Brigid and Peggy Sue English of Papillion, NB; Derek Watson of Crest View, FL. Three great grandchildren, Lyta Funds; Scarlett and Landon Grabiec, and many nieces and nephews. His service will be September 19, 2016 at First Baptist Church of Dade City, 37511 Church Avenue, Dade City, FL 33525. Viewing at 1500, and service at 1600. Pastor Mike Brooks will officiate. Flowers are welcome, but the family request, in lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the First Baptist Church of Dade City, Florida.
