Pauline Elizabeth Castle 1932-2023
(90 years young)
Born in Chelsea, Maine on May 24, 1932, in the time of the Great Depression, to Bertie and Evelyn (Pratt) Collins, Pauline Castle's life was full of hard work, love, heartbreak and laughter.
Pauline was called Polly or Freedom by loved ones and friends. She lived in Vassalboro, Maine the majority of her adult life and moved to Zephyrhills, Florida five years ago to live with family.
Pauline had fifteen siblings including brothers, Harold, Mitchell, Larry, and Richard Collins, sisters, Fern Clark, Jeanette LeClair, Doris Rowe, and Angie Strand, half-brothers Charles, Raymond, Phillip, Everett and Albert Collins and half-sisters, Elaine and Evelyn.
Pauline and her late husband Edwal had six children (spouses); Gloria (Wayne) Farrington, Diann (Evan) Hansen, Bryant (Laura Clark) Castle, Thomas Castle (Deborah Thibeau, now deceased), Lucinda Bilodeau, and Lyn Castle (Lynn Heck), and eleven grandchildren, (Diann's) Angela Craig and Gloria Warthen, (Bryant's) Sarah Castle, (Cindy's) Gordon Peace and Eric Piawlock, (Tom's) Dawn Frith, Holly Castle, Thomas B. Castle and Robin Corey, and (Lyn's) Nina Gargan and Aeriel Furrow (now deceased), and numerous great grandchildren.
For most of Pauline's life she worked very hard to keep family together and a roof overhead. She had many occupations including maid, nurse, home health care worker, and crafts entrepreneur. She loved ice cream (butter pecan and orange sherbet with pineapple were two of her favorites), thrift shopping with her daughters, movies (especially John Wayne westerns and Shirley Temple) and spending time with her family. In her younger days she very much enjoyed swimming and skating. She also enjoyed sewing, knitting, doing crafts, buying and selling jewelry, and gardening. She made afghans, patchwork quilts, potholders, doll clothes, and more. She made and sold beautiful Christmas wreaths for many, many years to make extra money for Christmas with the help of her children. She also made her own jams, jellies, pickles and canned vegetables.
Pauline became a devout Christian in early adulthood and her love of Jesus continued throughout her life. Her bible was a constant companion and she read it daily until her eyesight failed her.
She made her final journey to Heaven on January 9th, 2023.
Pauline will be laid to rest in the Chadwick Cemetery in South China, Maine later this year.
