Nancy was born Sept. 24, 1928, to the late Cornelius Patrick & Effie Mary McCabe of San Antonio, FL. She grew up with her siblings among the family's, groves, pastures, and along the shores of their beloved Lake Kersey. Educated by the Benedictine Sisters at Holy Name Academy, she next attended Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College in Terre Haute,
IN before completing her studies at Barry College in Miami, FL.
Nancy built a wonderful life in Dade City for her family, filled with dear friends and many church, community, and social activities. She especially enjoyed antiquing and thefamily cabin - a 2nd home - in the, mountains of western North Carolina. The monthly "Sisters Lunch" with her siblings rounded out a busy schedule. (And as last of the original "Tank Hill Moms", she rejoins friends Bonnie, Sadie, Mary, Lil, Ruth, Mary, Clariece and Louise, continuing to watch over loved ones.)
In addition to being a wife, mother and homemaker, Nancy was Owner-Operator of the citrus grove operation, MerryMeeting Inc. In later years, she concentrated on her real estate/mortgage holdings and various small businesses.
She was preceded in death by her husband(s), Nicholas S. Burns Jr., and Thomas Counihan; her son, James Kevin Burns, and grandson, Nicholas Charles Burns; one brother, Richard McCabe; and two sisters, Patricia Reynolds and Effie Finora.
Survivors include a son Nicholas Patrick (Judy) Burns, Franklin, TN, and daughter
Sarah Ellen Burns, Dade, City, FL; step-children Laurie Counihan (Doug) Brown,
Buffalo, NY,Neita Counihan Peterson, Bluemont, VA, Scott Counihan, Virginia Beach. VA and Bruce Counihan, Middlebury, VT; a brother, Cornelius "Mac" (BJ), McCabe and sister, Eileen Diez Watson, each of San Antonio, FL; 5 grandchildren, 5 great- grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind many cousins, nieces, and nephews. '
Funeral services will be held at 10am on Tuesday, February 25, at St Rita Catholic Church in Dade City. Interment will follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery in San Antonio.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations, be made in her memory to the
Benedictine Sisters at Holy Name Monastery, or to her favorite charity, Operation Smile.
