Johnston, Maureen Isobel Scott Nolan, 84, of Tippie Canoe Village, Zephyrhills, Florida, passed peacefully on June 16, 2012 after a short stay at the Zephyrhills Assisted Living Facility located within the Zephyr Hills Health and Rehab Center. Maureen was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland on June 30, 1927, the only child of William and Kathleen Scott. After surviving the bombings of WWII, as a young teenager, Maureen learned to be brave, hard working and bonded to her parents, aunts, uncles and cousins. Her early childhood provided her with strength throughout her life. She excelled at school and graduated from the Gregg School of business. Throughout her working life she was an executive secretary for several banks and businesses. After the War, Maureen met and married William Nolan Jr, a sergeant in the US Army stationed in Belfast on January 30, 1946. In May of that year Maureen traveled to the United States on a war bride ship and made many international friends. Two years later Maureens mother, Kathleen Scott, followed her daughters move to Watertown, New York. The family soon had 4 children, Sandra, Pat, Kate and Danny. Her first husband died in November 1968. In addition to raising her four children, Maureen always loved to tailor and sew, a skill which she learned at Everton School in Belfast. She made lovely dresses for her 3 daughters and later became an excellent quilter and artist. On January 30, 1975 Maureen met and married the love of her life, Lyle Johnston. They shared many hobbies together especially golfing, and flower and vegetable gardening. Lyle, a plumber by trade, was an accomplished woodworker. Their cosy home was filled with Adirondack crafts. They both loved to go dancing with their many friends at the Elks Club in New York and Florida, where they moved to in the 1990s. They were both members of the American Legion and were proud to fly an American flag in front of their homes. Even after 30 years of marriage they would always hold hands and show their affection for each other. Lyle died July 12, 2005. Maureen missed him very much.Maureen was active in many organizations:Zephyrhills Womens club, Zephyr Bees Quilt Club, St. Josephs craft group, Senior Adult Ministry (SAMs) Group at the Alliance Church which she enjoyed very much, and the womens Bible study group at the Alliance Church.Maureen is survived by her daughters: Sandra Nolan, Syracuse NY, grandchildren Christopher and Shannon; Patricia Ritter (Larry), Plattsburgh, NY, grandchildren Levi Ritter; and Kate DelSignore (Michael), Plattsburgh NYMaureen is also survived by great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild. Maureen was predeceased by her parents, her first and second husbands, William Nolan and Lyle Johnston, respectively, son Daniel and one granddaughter, Julia DelSignore.Maureen had a strong sense of faith and was devoted to learning more about her faith. A memorial will be held on what would be Maureens 85th birthday, June 30, 2012 at 10 AM at the Alliance Church on Fort King Road, Zephyrhills.
