IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mary Louise
Reid
September 4, 1937 – July 26, 2020
REID, Mary Louise (Lou), age 82, of Dade City, FL passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family on July 26, 2020. She was born on September 4, 1937 in Cleveland, OH to parents John James & Mary (Prucha) Rominske.
She grew up as part of a large family in Cleveland Ohio. In 1955 she graduated from Jane Adams Vocational High School with a certification in Cosmetology which provided her with a rewarding career. She married James P Maslanka in 1956 and they had three daughters, Jill, Janine and Judy. When James died in 1961 Mary Lou moved her daughters to Cape Coral, FL where her mother and stepfather were living. She met Douglas Miller (1940-1981) a few years later and they married and had a daughter Jean. After their marriage ended Mary Lou met Donald O Reid (1936-2007) and they built a wonderful life together in Little Torch Key, FL where they enjoyed all that the "Keys Life" had to offer. After Dons death, Mary Lou remained in the Keys enjoying almost 40 wonderful years there. She moved to Dade City in October 2019 to be near family and shortly thereafter was diagnosed with cancer.
Mary Lou loved doing crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, playing Scrabble with her girlfriends, watching Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, Perry Mason, cooking shows and murder mysteries. She loved Big Band music and would say that "as a young girl her dance card was always full". She enjoyed going to and having garage sales, meeting regularly with her girlfriends for dinner and drinks, planning dinner parties and entertaining guests, playing cards (she was a very good pinochle player), going to the local community theater where she was a season ticket holder and most of all traveling. Her fear of flying didnt stop her from driving from the Keys to visit friends and family all around the country while stopping at her favorite casinos along the way. She traveled to Ohio often to visit family for various occasions and to attend her Jane Adams annual reunions. She always looked forward to attending her familys celebrations which included weddings, graduations, birthdays and so much more. Helping with the party preparations and seeing everyone together brought her so much joy.
Mary Lou was a member of Big Pine United Methodist Church where she was very involved with church activities. She especially enjoyed helping with the churches Food Pantry and did so for many years. Mary Lou was also a long-time member of XI ALPHA THETA a chapter of the International BETA SIGMA PHI sorority in the Keys. She held many positions as a sorority sister and was proud to be involved in helping to raise funds and awareness for several local charities.
Along with her husband, Mary Lou was preceded in death by her parents and her grandson James Dykes (1977-2018). Mary Lou was blessed to have a large loving family. She is survived by her daughters Jill (Dykes, Bohner) Castillenti (Thomas), Janine Pierro (Charles), Judy (Spuhler) Bahr, Jean Miller, thirteen grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and her loving brother John James.
The family will announce plans for a Celebration of Life in honor of Mary Lou, both in the Keys and Cleveland Ohio at a later date.
