Obituary

Above all, Mary Ellen "Mev" (Vey) Adams was a woman of faith, trusting God with detailed concerns and prayers for everyone she encountered, but especially her family and close friends. She supported many missions throughout her life and was an active member of many churches, most recently at St. Ann Catholic Church in Bethany Beach, Delaware. As a leader in Bible Study Fellowship for many years, she shared her love of the scriptures with many women. She loved all kinds of music and singing, especially in groups, like the Rhodes High School chorus and the church senior choral group that traveled to nursing homes. With a heart for the weak and vulnerable, Mev trained to be a Raggedy Ann volunteer and spent several years providing connection and emotional support to hospital patients. She also rescued and loved many cats and dogs throughout her entire life.

Mary Ellen was born in Cleveland, Ohio on April 10, 1938 to Frank Vey (formerly Vejsickey) and Lilian (Knezinek) Vey. She graduated from Rhodes High (1956) and Ohio University (1960), where she obtained a degree in education. She found great pleasure in her career of teaching and was a lifelong learner, regularly researching a myriad of topics, from nature to religion to international relations and more. Language, word meanings and sounds fascinated her and she used clever sayings, alliterative phrases, and poetry as regular forms of communication. Her adventurous spirit led her to the developing community of Scottsdale, Arizona in the 1960s, where she embraced the climate, culture, and history. In 1968, she and her then husband opened their home to adopt an infant daughter, Laura Lee.

After several years in Columbus, Ohio, in 1976 Mev married Robert N. "Bob" Adams and moved to Oakton, Virginia for several years, where she explored the museums, monuments, and history of Washington, DC with her family. In 1979, they moved to Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, where they spent 25+ years. During that time, she worked with her husband, Bob, in their indoor sports business, Grand Slam USA, creating a thriving party business to accompany his baseball academy. In 2006, Mev and Bob moved to Ocean View, Delaware, where they enjoyed the shore life until they moved to Wesley Chapel, Florida in 2021 to be near Laura and her family. Mev was a faithful wife to Bob for 48 years, and a devoted mother and grandmother, always eager to share in the specific details of the lives of her family members.

Mary Ellen, age 86, passed away to be with the Lord on December 1, 2024 at her residence in Wesley Chapel after a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Lillian Vey. She is survived by her husband, Robert N. Adams; daughter, Laura (Marc) Pugliese of Wesley Chapel, Florida; step-son, Robert N. Adams, Jr. of Leesport, Pennsylvania; step-son, Bradford (Melissa) Adams of Rockville, Maryland; and her grandchildren Megan (Jimmy) Adams, Colleen Adams, Dominic Pugliese, Alex Adams, Erin Adams, Sean Adams, Christopher Adams, and Gabriel Pugliese.
