Marie Gambill Smith (known as "Bobbie") peacefully departed this life in the early morning hours of June 4th, 2021 at her Dade City, Florida home. She was 94 years old. Bobbie was the 9th of 12 children born on Piney Creek in Ashe County, North Carolina to the union of her parents, James Curtis Gambill and Amanda Brooks Gambill. She had 5 sisters (Ruby, Doris, Thelma, Kathleen & Martha) and 6 brothers (Gwyn, Archie, Dean, Robert, Bill & Dick). Her parents were fiercely independent Scots-Irish whose ancestors populated the mountains of Ashe County, NC for many generations. In researching her family heritage, Bobbie found their documented history extended back to 1735 and one branch on her mothers side were early Jamestown settlers. Throughout Bobbies life, the United Methodist Church was a profound influence, beginning with Sunday School at the rural church at Zion, MD. Later, it provided her an opportunity for education at Wesley College, Dover DE, where she graduated in 1945 the same year she met and married her husband, Paul Samuel Smith.
Bobbie & Paul lived many places, yet always remained active members of the United Methodist Church (the longest being 30 years at Avenue United in Milford, DE). Bobbie retired in 1985 from civilian employment as a Budget Analyst with the US Air Force at Dover AFB, Dover, DE. Her employment included a tour at Rhein-Main, Germany and 2 tours at Lajes Field, Azores. She and Paul shared their retirement years exploring the country, much of it in an RV. They were active members of the Wally Byam Caravan Club. In 1999, they moved from their home in Milford, DE and settled into an Airstream RV Resort in Dade City, Florida called Travelers Rest. She spent 9 years at Florida Presbyterian Homes in Lakeland, Florida, until returning to her home at Travelers Rest where she was well cared for by her son, Steve and daughter-in-law Donna, for the remainder of her days.
Bobbie was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Paul Smith. She is survived by their 3 sons: Paul Francis, Stephen Patrick (Donna) and
Dr. Gregory Brooks (Denise) as well as 5 grandchildren (Curtis Charles, Jamey, Erin, Sierra & Dakota) and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Bobbies final resting place will be alongside her husband Paul at Barratts Chapel in Frederica, Delaware, where a private service will be held at a
later date.
There is a Jewish tradition of placing a pebble at the grave site of the departed to symbolize the continuing presence of love and memories, which are as strong and durable as a rock. Bobbie requested that in lieu of flowers, her friends and family follow this meaningful tradition.
