Obituary

Maria Lucia Kinney passed away on 24 May 2026 in Dade City after a long seven year struggle with Alzheimer's disease. She was a beautiful women; her personal beauty and the beauty she shared through her paintings, event decorations and her wonderful sense of style were evident to everyone around her. She was a wonderful mother to Daniel and wife to me. She traveled the world in the seventies as a flight attendant (fashion stewardess) for Braniff International in their designer outfits, Eastern Airlines and finally Delta. Whilst with the airlines she vacationed in North Africa, China, Japan, France, Greece, Turkey, Israel, Spain, Hungary, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Poland and Berlin filled with wonderful antecedents and insights into their cultures. She was born in Bogota, Colombia in 1950, attended Los Andes University and spoke Spanish, English and French fluently. As an Army wife she lived in Panama, Colombia, and El Salvador. During the tour in El Salvador in 1990, she was in the back seat of a lightly armored Jeep Cherokee that was ambushed by leftist guerrillas. As the bullets smacked into the vehicle, Maria leaned forward and took the microphone off the dash board and make a calm and very clear report to the radio operators in the Embassy that they were taking fire and moving away. The radio operators heard both the machinegun fire and the sound of the rounds impacting the vehicle as she calmly reported in to them. I loved her dearly and she was the light of my life for thirty seven years. She is survived by her husband Lieutenant Colonel Dreher Kinney (US Army Retired), son Daniel, and two brothers and a sister. She was preceded in death by her parents and stepson Ian. She will be interned in Arlington National Cemetery, resting in hallowed ground alongside her husband's parents, other valiant souls: awaiting the eventual arrival of her husband.
