Obituary

After an extraordinary life dedicated to his family, friends and his community, Marc J. Vigue passed away on October 5, 2014. in Zephyrhills, Fla., after a hard fought battle with cancer. He was 80 years old.Born in a log cabin at Churchill Lake to Clarence and Emile Veilleux, in what many would consider unpromising circumstances, Marc lived a disciplined and purposeful life marked by success in love, business, politics and community service. He began his first day of school in Waterville not knowing a single word of English but went on to graduate from high school and marry Sylvia, his wife of 59 years. After school he served his country proudly attached to the US Army 7th Corps in Stuttgart, Germany. Following his military service he worked his way through college while supporting his wife and their first two of four children. After graduating from the University of Maine, he accepted a position at Thomas College, where he taught history and coached the hockey team. In a gesture that is testament to how he affected everyone that he met even early in his career, the graduating class at Thomas dedicated the yearbook to him after only his second year. After teaching he worked for Prudential Insurance until he and Sylvia opened The Carriage House, a Waterville business which they operated for 20 years. Marc enjoyed self-employment because of the opportunity it gave him to follow his passion for family and community service. The awards he received from the latter could fill a trophy case, but he requested we not list them here. The awards he received from his family would not fill a space but they did fill his heart with love and tremendous pride every day of his storied life. After selling his business and retiring Marc was elected and served four terms in the Maine House of Representatives, representing District 54 (Winslow). He loved serving "his people" in Augusta, whether it was organizing a collaborative group of Republicans and Democrats or introducing simple legislation to help a working family, he always sought opportunity to help others. He was an avid golfer, bridge player, and longtime coach with a passion for ice hockey. He enjoyed weekly skates with his friends and attending high school and college hockey games, where he reveled in watching his son Mike skate as a member of the first UMO hockey team. Marc continued to skate into his 70s.Marc is survived by his wife Sylvia of 59 years; four children, Stephen Veilleux and wife Kathryn, Michael Vigue and wife Donna, Lori Weaver and husband Michael, and James Vigue and wife Amanda; eleven grandchildren; sisters Lorette Gilbert, Theresa Libby and Claire Hart; brother-in-law Eugene Hart, Brothers Guy and Eleanor Vigue, Alcee and Cecile Vigue; many nieces and nephews. He will be deeply missed by countless friends and loving family. The interment and a service of committal will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 26th at 12:00 pm at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 163 Mt. Vernon Rd, Augusta, Maine. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Gulfside Regional Hospice at 5760 Dean Dairy Road, Zephyrhills, FL 33541.
