IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mabel Louise
Toth
September 19, 1926 – August 7, 2023
On Monday August 7th 2023, Mabel Louise Toth, loving wife and mother of 3 boys, passed away at the age of 96. Mabel was born on September 19,1926 in Detroit Michigan to John and Mary Bennett. She joined the Canadian Army at the age of 17 and served during WWII. She married Joseph Toth on May 3rd 1952, and they raised 3 boys. Mabel was preceded in death by her father John, her mother Mary, her husband of 58 years Joseph, 6 brothers and 5 sisters. She is survived by her three children: Jim, Daniel and Doug, her sister Winnie, and several grandchildren, great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Mabel was a good cook, and married to a Hungarian, she excelled at cooking large quantities of food. Combined with her love of fishing, primarily at the Au Sable river, she put out some huge and delicious fish fries. She also loved to go deer hunting with her husband Joe. She cooked wild game superbly. Anything the hunters brought home she did a wonderful job of preparing.
Mabel was involved with the Masonic temple Eastern Stars. She was also a charter member of American Legion Post 407 in Southfield MI. She was very ambitious with a commitment to volunteering. She started a food co-op that she ran herself for several years. She was a head waitress and catering manager. She worked tirelessly transporting all three boys to and from sports, music, etc. She was a Post WWII Red Cross Gray Lady at local hospitals in Detroit MI, a Cub Scout Den Mother, a "Hockey Mom", a Citrus County FL Hospital Volunteer, a volunteer at the Caring Pregnancy Center at Seven Rivers Church. She was the treasurer for the Southfield United Methodist Church credit union for many years. The credit union is now an established bank, but when Mabel was the treasurer she ran the credit union from the house, and members came over to the house to make deposits.
Mabel also had a strong creative side. She could play piano by ear. She amazed us one day as she bought a piano, and after years of us never knowing she could play, played several songs the minute she sat down. Mabel had a passion for sewing. She reupholstered furniture, sewed beautiful clothing and sewed just about anything that could be sewn. She ran her own Seamstress business out of her home. She was a Master Quilter, completing multiple quilts in her lifetime. These quilts, some award winning, are now cherished heirlooms for her remaining family and friends. She also taught quilting to students and helped hundreds of them learn the craft of quilting. Mabel was considered so discerning that she was a judge at quilting competitions. Her reputation as a Master Quilter remains even after her passing.
