Obituary

On the morning of May 2nd, 2024, Dr. Katherine "Kitty" Wright Piersall passed away at her home in San Antonio, Florida. She was 88 years old. Kitty was born on January 28th, 1936, to George and Thelma Wright in Bellevue, Kentucky. She had one sister, Margaret, who was six years her senior. As a teenager, Kitty was a finalist in the Scripps National Spelling Bee and went on to graduate high school at the age of 16. She earned Bachelor of Arts and Master of Education degrees from Eastern Kentucky University, where she was also a majorette. In 1954 she married Gerald Piersall, and they raised four sons together. In 1971, the family moved to Dade City, Florida, where Kitty began an extensive career serving Pasco County Schools as a teacher (Moore Mickens Middle School), assistant principal (Moore Mickens Middle School), and principal (San Antonio Elementary School and Weightman Middle School). In 1985, Kitty earned a Doctorate of Education from the University of South Florida. Kitty went on to become the District Director of Research for the remainder of her career in Pasco County Schools. After retiring from the school district, she served as the State Director of the Florida Elementary and Middle School Committee for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools until 2003. Throughout her tenure, Kitty received numerous accolades for her outstanding service and dedication to education. In addition to her accomplished career in education, Kitty was also a devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church of Dade City for over 50 years. She served as the choir director and organist for several years, became an elder of the church in 1990, and served as sessions clerk from 2000-2002. Kitty was also a member of the MENSA society. After a fulfilling career, she found joy in traveling Europe with her friends; reading novels; playing (and winning) bridge; working 1,000+-piece jigsaw puzzles; and spending quality time with her four sons and "daughters-in-love," ten grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Kitty is preceded in death by her parents and sister. She is survived by her sons Jeff (Judy), Keith (Marcia), Todd (Stella), and Glenn (Kristina); her grandchildren Kali (Whit), Isaac (Amanda), Ellie (Shawn), Chloe (Alex), Wes (Victoria), Sarah (Alex), Georgia, Grant, Cole, and Sophie; and her great-granddaughters Aline, Maleigh, Collins, and Zoey. Kitty will be laid to rest at Friendship Cemetery in Boaz, Alabama, alongside her mother and father. A celebration of life will be held at 11 am on Saturday, June 29th, 2024, at First Presbyterian Church of Dade City. The church will provide lunch immediately following the service.
