John Marvin "Papa New" Newsome, 88, passed away on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, at Rosecastle of Zephyrhills surrounded by family. Prior to his move to Rosecastle, he lived in Dade City, Florida in the same house he and his father-in-law, Joseph Hunnicutt built in the late 50s. John was born on October 22, 1934, in Lakeland, Florida to parents, Thomas and Annie Newsome. He graduated from Lakeland High School in 1952. Growing up, he was a boy scout, went to Boys State, was a member of the Honor Society, and numerous other clubs, and was on the swimming team. He was married for 65 years to the love of his life, Kathryn Hunnicutt Newsome (Deceased Oct. 15, 2019). John worked briefly for his brother-in-law, Ray Townsend, before becoming a clerk at Dade City Hardware. In 1962, he purchased the store from former owner, Ray Davis and remained the owner until it was sold in 2018. John enjoyed building/ creating many things and flying kites. He took great pleasure in riding motorcycles, square dancing, and traveling to Florida State Football games in both Tallahassee and other states. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Dade City, the Kiwanis Club, and Seminole Boosters. he will be greatly missed by all of those who knew him. John is survived by his children, John Newsome, Jr. (Deceased), Jill Evans, Jo Anne Endress (Jim), Julie Altenbach (Rob); grandchildren, Whitney Ward Deason (Jacob), Weston Ward, William Ward, Joe Endress (Angie), Jamie Endress (Deceased), Josh Altenbach (Allie), Noah Altenbach, Kara Altenbach; great-grandchildren, Aubrey and Jonathan Endress, Delaney, Declyn, Devereaux, and Dreher Deason, & Turner Altenbach; and many nieces and nephews. A service will be held at Hodges Funeral Home, 11441 US Hwy. 301, Dade City on Saturday, May 13th at 1:00 pm followed by a Celebration of Life at Savory Roots (previously Dade City Hardware) 14326 7th St., Dade City from 2:00-4:00 pm.
