John Russell Hernandez, son of Alberto and Viola Ellen Hernandez, passed away Thursday May 23, 2019. Although he was born in Stanford, Conn, on May 14, 1930 he was raised in Lakeland, Fl and claimed Dade City as his home. As a teenager at age 16, he obtained his first job as a lumber jack in Oregon. When he returned, he worked assisting the director of Lakeland Public Library, who changed the direction of his life by teaching him to love books and to go to college. The Army turned out to be his financial vehicle. John proudly served in the Korean War and retired with a disability from the US Army Reserve. He graduated with a Masters Degree in accounting from University of FL with honors and worked as a CPA the reminder of his life.He is survived by his wife Jewell (Sandy) Wynn Hernandez, his sister Joyce Hernandez Pruett, his three children Michael Curtis Parrish, Deborah Hernandez Craig, Theresa Hernandez Coleman, five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.The family will receive friends in Dade City, FL at Hodges Family Funeral Home on Wed. May 29, 2019 from 10:00-11:00 p.m, with services at 11:00 p.m. and the burial in the Florida National Cemetery at 1:00 p.m.
