John Francis Gaines of Zephyrhills, FL passed away Friday, October 11, 2024, at his home. He was born October 4, 1933, in Palatka, FL to John Francis & Marion Louise (Barco) Gaines. He grew up in Macclenny, Palatka and Daytona, Florida graduating from Mainland High School. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy. After his service, he graduated from the University of Florida, completing a Bachelor's degrees in physical education as well as Master and Doctorate degrees in education administration. He was a lifelong educator; teaching, coaching football, swimming and basketball, a dean, high school principal, Superintendent of Schools for Putnam County, Assistant Superintendent of Schools in Pasco County and leading the Florida Associations of School Administrators. He moved to Zephyrhills 33 years ago from Tallahassee. John was a life long member of the Methodist Church, serving in several lay leadership roles. He was a passionate fan of the Florida Gators, traveling around the county to see his Gators play.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Joan Revels Gaines. He is survived by his children: John Bryan Gaines and Nancy Gaines Ballew, their spouses Katrina and David, six grandchildren, Gracie, Kaydi, John David, Annie, Bo and Matt. As well as four great grandchildren, Charliegh Kate, Tripp, Hayden and Caroline.
Graveside services will be held 11:30 am Friday, October 25, 2024, at the St. Johns Cemetery of Cotton Plant (12390 West Highway 328, Ocala, Florida 34482) in Ocala.
