John Allen Davis, Sr. 88, of Wesley Chapel passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 11th, 2013 at his daughters home in Valrico, Florida. Visitation and viewing will be held at St Anthony of Padua Church, 32832 Massachusetts Ave., San Antonio, Florida. Friday, August 16th from 6:00 until 7:00 pm and a Prayer Vigil from 7:00 to 7:30pm.The funeral mass will be held at St Anthony of Padua Church on Saturday, August 17th at 11:00am with a luncheon reception following in the social hall. Hodges Family Funeral home in Dade City are handling the funeral arrangements. John was born in South Plain, New Jersey to Russell and Elsie (Leigh) Davis on October 8, 1924. He went on to join the Army Air Corp in 1943 and served for three years earning the rank of Sergeant. He earned a Bachelors degree as well as two Masters Degrees from Kent State University. He received his Jurist Doctorate from the University of Miami. He went on to build a 30 year award-winning career as a teacher and championship coach in the Dade County School System. He was head wrestling coach for Richmond Heights Junior high and Miami Killian Sr. high. His numerous awards included Teacher of the Year, Coach of the year for wrestling both at the junior high and high school level. He was one of the founders of the United States Wrestling Federation, was man of the year in amateur wrestling in Florida and a member of the national wrestling Hall of Fame, Florida Chapter class of 2002. John enjoyed all types of sports especially attending the NCAA wrestling championships every year with his sons and grandsons .He loved exercising and still could be found jogging in his pool up to three months before he died. He was involved in Knights of Columbus serving as Grand Knight in Council 10671 and Past Faithful Navigator .John is predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Esther (Falcone). John is lovingly remembered by his children Jeff of Gainesville, Florida; his son Bob (Lynn) of Aylett, NC and his daughter, Susan (Mark) Vandeventer of Valrico, Florida, his six grandchildren, one great- grandchild , his sister-in-law Lois Falcone, his siblings, Doris Sprangler and Gloria Ogden, nieces and nephews and many other countless friends and relatives..In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Anthony of Padua Catholic School in the memory of John A. Davis, PO box 847 San Antonio, Fl. 33576 or National Wrestling Hall of Fame Stillwater, Oklahoma.
