Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather John Rainey Council. Rainey passed peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving family on the morning of Monday, July 14th, 2025 in Dade City, Florida.

Rainey was born on August 17th, 1939 in his family home located in Americus, Georgia to parents Elizabeth Rainey Council and George Tower Council. John was one of five children, with one brother and three sisters: George, Sarah, Mary Ida, and Anne. In 1946 when Rainey was just six-years-old, his family made the move from Georgia to Dade City, Florida.

Rainey continued his early life in Dade City before enlisting in the United States Army in 1957, where he would serve for three years. Rainey went on to attend and graduate from University of South Florida's Charter Class of 1960 with focus on an undergraduate degree in political science and history. Rainey's interest in law study was sparked during this time in college. Rainey began his impressive career as an attorney after he graduated from University of Florida's law program, serving as a member of the Florida Bar for 51 years.

Rainey's passions spanned beyond his career and blossomed into his family life. He married his loving wife Geraldine Council in 1972, proceeding to raise four children: Ronald, Curtis, Lee, and Will. Rainey became "Grandpa" and "Great-Grandpa" along the way, with eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Embracing the role of a true family man, Rainey made the most of his time with all family members. Golfing, fishing, reading, and sharing Civil War history, John was passionate about a variety of different subjects and hobbies.

Rainey is preceded in death by his siblings: George, Sarah, Mary Ida, and Anne, as well as his parents Elizabeth and George.

Rainey's light will be fondly remembered, from his beloved wife Geraldine to his extensive family and friends. In every fish caught, every page turned, every golfer's swing, and in each bit of Civil War trivia, Rainey will continue touching the lives of all who knew him.
