John Douglas Barnes age 39 passed away on June 27, 2023 John was born on October 26, 1983, at MacDill AFB Tampa, FL to John H. and Valerie L. Barnes. John came from a family of military Veterans. His father served in the U.S. Coast Guard for over 20 years. His paternal grandfather served in the Korean War and was awarded the Purple Heart when he was severely wounded. His maternal grandfather served in the U.S. Air Force. All his life, John talked of being a soldier. On his eighteenth birthday, he skipped school to enlist in the Army, it was just 6 weeks after 9/11. He graduated from Sickles High School in 2002. John went to Basic Training at Fort Benning, GA then onto jump school. His first assignment was with the famed 101st Airborne unit at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. By March 2003, John was in Iraq and part of the initial invasion. He completed a year in Iraq and came back to Fort Campbell. In July 2004, John met Angela Hedger and they were married in December 2004. Their son, Gavin, was born on June 1, 2005. John returned to Iraq for his second tour and was catastrophically wounded 6 months into his tour. He sustained a penetrating traumatic brain injury that changed who he was, physically, mentally, and emotionally. He spent 6 months in the hospital and the next 12 years in therapy of all kinds. He relearned to walk and dress himself. He suffered violent seizures due to the injury. His mother Valerie and later stepfather Matt were his devoted and constant advocate, cheerleader, comforter, supporter, and guardian, to keep him safe and moving forward. John loved surfing, martial arts, watching movies, and drumming. John is survived by his parents Valerie and Matt Brown, Father John H. Barnes(Girette), Son Gavin Barnes, and former wife Angie Turnpaugh(Frank). Grandparents Doug and Pat Gluntz, Jane Brown, sister Ashley Ivey(Aaron), step brothers Mitchell (Jamie), Martin, Matthew Jr(Haley), and Mason Brown. Aunts: Dana Palmer (Dan), Karen VanBourgondien (Marty), Lauren Koffinas (Scott), Joann Sherrill (Herb), Uncles: Stephen Gluntz and Doug Gluntz Jr, Paul Barnes, and David Barnes. Cousins: Alison Ovenden (Nick), Christopher Adamson, Austin Adamson (Michelle), Julia Lindsey (Josh), Tara Gluntz, Erika Hayes, Brooke Hayes, Trey Hayes, and Ava VanBourgondien, Dakota Koffinas, Jennifer and Kyle Barnes. Nieces Kimberly, Ashlynn, Isabella, and Reagan Ivey. Nephew Robert Tommy Brown. John is preceded in death by paternal grandparents John A and Billie Barnes, Paternal step-Grandfather Tommy Brown. Burial 1:30 on Friday, July 7, 2023, at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell FL. The family is asking for donations to the Wounded Warrior Project in lieu of flowers.
