Obituary

Jean McClain Murphy went to be with her Lord and Savior, Good Friday, April 10, 2020. Born July 8, 1922, Knoxville, Tennessee to Joseph and Ella McClain, where her father was a brakeman on the L&N Railroad, her mother, a homemaker. They lived in Etowah, Tennessee; Jean oldest, with brothers, William and Joe McClain.

She graduated, with academic honors from Etowah High School and received a scholarship to Carson Newman College in Jefferson City, Tennessee. College years, she engaged in her love of music, choirs, the organ and piano. Jean starred on a weekly gospel radio program in Knoxville.

During WWII, she reunited with her high school sweetheart, Pat Murphy, who was finishing Georgia Tech University in Engineering, just as he was drafted into the South Pacific Campaign, they became engaged.

They married in 1947, and moved to the homestead of Pat's, in Zephyrhills, Florida, where they lived with son, Alan, and daughter,Lynn.

Jean received her degree from Florida Southern College with a Masters in Music, receiving the position of Minister of Music at the First Baptist Church of Zephyrhills for twenty-four years. She conducted five choirs, organizing Vacation Bible schools, retreats, revivals, traveling choirs, and Handel's Messiah, each Christmas.

Jean created a successful travel agency, Freedom Travel, with groups-touring the world from 1964 to 1991, visiting 264 countries- the Holy Land twelve times. She enjoyed collecting mementos and photography from her travels, presenting slide presentations for philanthropic groups/ clubs.

Jean was an avid member and president ('94-'95) of the Rotary Club of Zephyrhills Daybreak. She was named Rotarian of the Year in 1993, and was a recipient of the prestigious" Paul Harris Fellow Award."

She served as P. E.O. president/ co-founder of Chapter E.U. and was named the Zephyrhills Chamber of Commerce Member of the Year from 1993-1994 and Citizen of the Year in 1992.

Serving on the Community Bank of Pasco County Board of Directors and the EPMH Hospital Foundation Board of Directors, Jean was an active member of the Zephyrhills Garden Club, for 20 years.

She is survived by son, Alan (Penny) Murphy of West Palm Beach; Lynn ( Tommy) Oakley, Winter Haven.

Grandchildren- Lauren (Zane) Schwenk of Winter Haven; Alan (Amy) Murphy, Jr., West Palm Beach; Marissa (Adriaanse) Lodewicus of West Palm Beach; Perry (Jeff) House, Orlando; Camille (Jessie) Kubicek of West Palm Beach.

Great-grandchildren- Stella and Stone Schwenk; Alan(Trey) Murphy III, and Elsie Kubicek

Due to current circumstances, we are unable to gather to celebrate Jeans life, as a family and community. We look forward to a celebration of life when free to come together. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the The Rotary Club Foundation, your local Hospice, and First Baptist Church, Zephyrhills, Florida
