IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Janice Adele
Sweetman
April 10, 1942 – June 25, 2025
Janice "Jan" Adele Sweetman, 83, was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and nurse. She passed away on June 25th, 2025. She was born on April 10, 1942 in Davenport, IA to Charles "Charlie" Vincent and Emma "Marge" Margaret Stolmeier. Her greatest passion in life was being a nurse. Her compassion, dedication and tenacity for caring and advocating for not only her patients but their families for almost 30 years, was definitely a God given gift.
She attended high school at Assumption Catholic High School in Iowa. After high school, she married the love of her life, Fredrick "Fred" Jerome Sweetman and they had three beautiful daughters, which she loved dearly. After having her three daughters she went on to St. Anthony's Fransiscan School of Nursing at the age of 33 years old to become a nurse. After 41 years in Iowa, they moved to Florida where she spent the last 42 years of her life. Once in Florida she decided to go back to school to get a Bachelors of Science Degree in nursing because education was one of the most important things to her, not just for herself, but for her to encourage her daughters and grandchildren to pursue. Leading by example, she attended Hillsborough Community College before completing her degree at St Leo University at the age of 55 years old. She worked at University Community Hospital as a registered nurse in Tampa, FL until she retired at the age of 63.
While in Iowa, Jan and her husband Fred joined a bowling league and were paired with another couple to form a team, Steve & Berta Murphey. Not only did they bowl 12 years together, but they became life long friends, even vacationing with their families together for several summers in Minnesota. After her retirement in Florida, she and Fred would spend their summers in Minnesota in their lake house and always made sure to stop and see the Murphey's in Iowa not just on the way up but also on the way back because they were family.
The years she wasn't nursing, volunteer work was her priority. She had so much love in her heart for helping others that she was dedicated to devoting her time when she could. When she was a young mother with three little girls she volunteered with the women's group at St John's Vianney Church, as well as being a girl scout leader. After retirement, she crocheted thousands of hats, booties, and blankets for newborns that she donated to hospitals in Florida as well as in Minnesota. She spent several days a week volunteering as a Patient Liaison at UCH. Once she moved into Tampa Bay Golf and Country Club, she joined the Sunshine Committee, to spread joy to others in the community, while also participating in the Women's Crochet Group.
Jan was an extremely intelligent, focused, and hard working woman who was very passionate about her goals, being a nurse was one, but raising her daughters to be strong, independent women was the other. She took such pride in watching her daughters grow into strong women, who went fearlessly out into the world to pursue their own dreams. From her daughters came the last great joy in her life, her grandchildren, and recently great grandchildren. She was given shirts that proudly displayed all her grandchildren's names and she made sure to wear them as often as she could. She also made sure everyone knew, she wasn't just Grandma, she was Googie, a name and a badge of honor she wore, as a gift from her eldest grandchild, Christopher. So proud in fact, that when her first great grandchild was born and she was asked what she wanted to be called, she proudly said, "Googie, just as I have always been, it is the most special name I have." She adored her grandchildren, driving all over with Fred to watch them all their different events and school activities, and to see them as often as she could. She was loved by many and will be missed by us all.
She is predeceased by her adoring Husband Fred Sweetman, they spent 52 beautiful years together. Her brother-in-law Glenn Williams, her beloved grandchild, Christopher E. Sampson, and her loving parents; Charlie & Marge Stolmeier, and Francis "Toad" & Doris Sweetman.
