MARSHALL, James Michael "Jim" 80 of Clearwater died Sunday, March 12, 17 in Clearwater. Jim was born in Bridgeport, CT to Joseph Marshall & Helen (Medak) Marshall Williams. He was a 1954 graduate of Leesburg High School, Leesburg, FL where he first made a name for himself as an undersized halfback on the football team. After graduating he accepted a football scholarship to attend the University of Tampa, where he played both football and baseball for Sam Bailey, in 1958, his senior year, he was shared honors as Floridas all-state catcher with Boyd Coffie. After playing for the semi-pro Leesburg Lakers and in the Dodgers organization, he took a job teaching at King High School in Tampa, where he became the first baseball coach (1961-1968). In 1969 Jim accepted a position as a scout with San Diego Padres, where he was instrumental in signing some very good players including Bill Almon, Johnny Grubb and Mike Ivie. He was also a scout for the New York Mets and served his country in the US Army. Jim is survived by his son James M. Marshall, II of Ft. Myers, FL, Brother John (Beth) Williams of Federal Way, WA, two granddaughters Jaimee and Emily, his former wife Pat Marshall and nieces and nephews Amanda (Sean), Savannah, John Daniel, and Timothy. A Memorial Mass will be said at 10:00 am at Mary Help of Christian Church, 6400 East Chelsea Str. Tampa, FL 33610. Those wishing to honor Jim are asked to consider a donation to the King High School Athletic Boosters Club, 6815 N. 56th Str. Tampa, FL 33610.
