On June 6th, 2023, after a hard-fought battle with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Henry Doerr Jr met his Lord and savior in Heaven at age 71. He was born in Dade City on April 22, 1952, and lived in Zephyrhills Florida with his family. He is the first son of Alice Mary Ziegler and Henry Doerr. He was a constant protector of his sister Anna (Poe) and brothers, Thomas (Tommy), Paul, and Michael (Mike). A proud class of 1971 graduate from Zephyrhills High School, he regularly supported fund raisers, sporting events, and school volunteer activities. He made a life in various professions after high school but none he was prouder of then his work on the O.J. Thrall Tobacco farm in Windsor Connecticut. It was there that he met his spouse and raised his four sons as he ran the nations oldest family-owned farm, an original land grant from the queen of England in 1646.
Both his parents, his brothers Paul and Tommy, his second son Jonathan, and his grandson Jonathan Joseph greeted him upon his arrival in heaven. He is survived by his favorite sister Anna, baby brother Mike, and three sons and their families Henry III (Hank) and Lisa, Andrew (AJ) and Natosha, and Taylor (like Elizabeth Taylor but a boy) and Katie Beth. Additionally, he is survived by his grandchildren, Ryan Thomas Koehler, Erin Lee Cruite, Kyli Anne Cruite, Emmitt Michael Doerr, and Everleigh Rose Doerr as well as one great grandchild, Silas Timothy Koehler.
Many generations of Tobacco farm workers, including his brothers and sons, remember him for his honest leadership, caring mentorship, and expert knowledge of farm work throughout every season. His memory and legacy transcended many decades even after he moved to Bradenton Florida in the early 1990s to pursue his next career. Upon moving to Bradenton, he completed the Registered Nursing (RN) program from Manatee Community College. He completed his final state exam with a near perfect score and began providing exemplary care at Blake Medical Center (hospital) Emergency Room (ER). He constantly cared for his patients and many people found extreme comfort in his humble bedside manner. One patient, a boat captain, provided Henry a lifetime boarding pass and told Henry that he is the reason he recovered and was able to return to his fishing boat. That pass was often used to take his four sons out deep-sea fishing and is where they learned life lessons with their father. He finished up his Nursing career as a Hospice nurse in Dade City and often introduced his sons to elderly patients who provided life lessons and stories from various eras of American History. He provided kind words, sympathetic ears, many jokes, "true" stories, books, puzzles and most importantly hope to his terminally ill patients to keep them engaged while providing end of life care.
Following his MS diagnosis, Henry spent his time doing what he loved; Storytelling, mechanic work, yard sales, and traveling around to visit with his friends. He spent hours traveling thru yard sales, tag sales, and flea markets with his friend "Wild Bill" (Mike Ricard), tell jokes and stories with Elden Bond, and watch sporting events and TV with Ronnie Barnett. He constantly bothered his best friend, Kenny Hopper, about the daily business of the farm by calling him to check on the progress. Henry loved to drive to North Florida to check on Kennys own tree farm and help when he could to fix irrigation systems, tractors, or other issues when Kenny needed a hand. That lifelong harassment (or friendship as they called it) continued until Kennys passing earlier this year.
Family and Friends knew he could think about any mechanical puzzle or automobile issue, identify the problem, and use unique tools and processes to fix the item. Countless hours were spent in the back yard or back patio concrete slab behind his parents house fixing cars and trucks with his brothers, sons, and nephews. His yard always seemed to have an obscure item that could be used as a solution to any vehicle issue, and to everyones surprise, he always knew just where it was located.
He remained active in the Catholic Church and social among friends throughout his battle. He attended various Zephyrhills High School class reunions and functions and always did his best to maintain contact with his friends. With each stage of his MS, he found a way to maintain hope and make jokes to comfort those around him. A true example of a Catholic man of faith.
His funeral services will be performed at the St Josephs Catholic Church located at 5345 16th Street, Zephyrhills Florida 33542 on Thursday June 15th, 2023. The service starts with a viewing at 1000 and a Mass service at 1100. The family will receive guests at the parish center following the service. According to his final wishes, he will be interred with his son Jonathan on Friday June 16th, 2023, at the Manasota Memorial Park Cemetery located at 53rd Avenue East, Bradenton Florida at 10a.m.
