POLK, Gwendolyn "Gwen" 85 of Dade City died Saturday, July 8, 2017. Mrs. Polk was born in Bowling Green, FL to Oscar V. & Gladys (Brooks) Knight and was a resident of Dade City for many years. Being a dedicated wife and mother, she constantly supported their many endeavors and made sure her family always came first. A Godly woman that was extremely active in her community. She was a long standing member of the First United Methodist Church of Dade City, the United Methodist Womens Ministry, The Dade City Womans Club, The Dade City Garden Club, served many years as the den mother for the Boy Scouts of America, Volunteered as a pink lady at Humana Hospital-Dade City and was crowned the 1950 Strawberry Queen. As a breast cancer survivor, Gwen spent many hours sharing her story and words of encouragement as an advocate with other breast cancer patients. She had a passion for doing for others and was always first to prepare a special meal, bake a cake and made sure the needs of others were met before those of herself. Anyone that knew her knew her home & heart was open to them as she cherished doing for others. She was preceded in death by her son Fred in 1999 and is survived by her husband of 66 years Freeman, children; Ray & Margaret Polk of Dade City, Tim & Sharon Polk of Zephyrhills, FL, Sandy & Barry Hayes of Lakeland and Daughter-In-Law Charlotte (Polk) & Richard Back of Dade City. Sister Peggy Leadbetter of Morgan, NC, Brother Jimmy Knight of Punta Gorda, FL. 11 Grandchildren Kelly Smith, Shannon Jeter, Justin Polk, Tommy Polk, Alicia Guanio, Michael Polk, Bobby Polk, Christina Polk, Timmy Polk, Jr, Chase Simonds, Chelsea Ryan, 23 Great Grandchildren Joshua, Todd, Makenna, Ty, Nathan, Houston, Hardy, Mason, Ella, Matt, Cauy, Julie, Carly, Savanna, Connor, Aiden, Kaya, Elijah, William, Brynleigh, Patrick, Savannah, Izzie. A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 at 11:00 am at the First United Methodist Church of Dade City. In lieu of flowers the family request that you consider donations to the Youth, Children and/or Daycare Programs at the First United Methodist Church, Dade City, FL. Hodges Family Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
