GIL PETERSON 86, passed away in Dade City, FL June 17th, 2016. He was born in Plattsmouth Nebraska February 25,1930 to Lena and Harold Peterson. Survived by the love of his life Marilyn, wed for over six decades; Three sons Mark (Mia) of Hot Springs AR, Chris (Tracy) Little Rock, AR and Kyle (Susan) Dade City; Beloved grandkids Cari, Skye, Jace, Jim, Trent, Blair, Kate and John; Brother Wendell and sister Donna Jean. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Harold, Jr. Gil attended Plattsmouth High and Omaha . He was a standout football player and had a brief stint with the 49ers. He was a highly successful Football Coach and Athletic Director for over 40 years starting at Huron College in 1954 where he had a 33 game win streak and numerous conference championships. Gil then moved to Western Illinois (1970) where he advanced the athletics program from NAIA to NCAA Division 1 status before retiring 1995. He is credited for creating the Gateway Conference which evolved into the Missouri Valley Football Conference. His excellence in coaching and administration is exhibited through many honors including 5 different Sports Halls of Fame. Gil, affectionately known as BIG DOG to friends and family, touched the lives of many. He will be greatly missed. Services will be held 2pm Sunday, June 26, 2016 at the 301 Chapel of Hodges Family Funeral Home 11441 U.S. 301 Dade City, FL 33525.
