Obituary

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Gary, a remarkable man who lived his life in the moment and refused to let his condition define him. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and an extraordinary friend, whose spirit and kindness touched the lives of everyone who knew him. Born on February 12, 1961 and leaving us on June 10, 2026, Gary was a truly accomplished individual. He was a talented woodcarver, whose whimsical creations reflected his creativity and passion. As a near-professional poker player, he brought a unique blend of strategy and joy to the game. He loved music, especially the blues, even venturing out by himself to Memphis and Beale Street for a week one summer. His commitment to serving others was evident in his volunteer work with Meals on Wheels, where he delivered not only meals but companionship and warmth to those in need. Gary was also an Army Veteran. Family was at the heart of everything he did. He adored spending time with his wife, Julie, and was a devoted father to his sons, Ryan (Amanda) and Tanner (Emily), and daughters, Rayna (Jordan), and Nicole (Jeffrey). His grandchildren—Jacob, Andrew, Emma, Grant, Ginny, Maeva, Lucy, Mason, Kennedy, JJ, Joanna, Madison, Rhiannon, Evelynn, Chloe, Lennox, Tenley, and great-granddaughter Robin—were his pride and joy, filling his life with laughter and love. He cherished family gatherings, where wonderful food, games, and cheering for the Nebraska Huskers and St. Louis Cardinals brought everyone together. As one family member beautifully stated, "He was the kindest, most loving person they had ever met." His warmth and generosity extended to his sisters, Teri (Herb) and Jan (Dan), and many wonderful nieces, nephews, and beloved friends, all of whom will miss him dearly. He was predeceased by his beloved parents, grandson Daniel, and brother Steve. Although Gary is no longer with us, his legacy of love, kindness, and living life to the fullest will forever remain in our hearts. A celebration of his life will be held 1 pm June 15, 2026 at Hodges Family Funeral Home, 36327 Pure Water Way, Zephyrhills, Florida 33541 where family and friends are invited to share their memories and honor a life well-lived. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Meals on Wheels in Gary's honor, continuing his legacy of kindness and service to others. Rest in peace, our dear Gary. You will be missed beyond measure.
