Obituary

Garth Sanford Jones 1945-2022 Garth Sanford "Sam" Jones, 77, passed away on Tuesday, March 15, 2022, surrounded by his family. He was born in Richmond, VA to the late Garth and Elizabeth "Libby" Jones. He and his brother Dennis grew up there, living down the street from his future wife, Linda Wilmoth. Sam and Linda were married in 1970, and lived happily together in Richmond, Newport News, and Virginia Beach, before moving to Charlottesville and Florida in recent years. Their children Brian (Katherine) and Lindsey (Matthew) were Sam's pride and joy. He was a devoted father and loved taking them to the river to fish, teaching them how things worked and making sure they had everything they needed to excel. Sam was also a loving granddad to five grandchildren: Jack, Lydia, Benjamin, Tyler, and William. Sam and Linda were preparing to celebrate 52 years of marriage at the end of March. Sam was his high school valedictorian and attended MIT as well as VCU. In 1986, he started an engineering design and implementation company, developing electronics and embedded software products for clients with dedication for 35 years. Sam was a driven professional who created numerous product designs in the aerospace, satellite, and industrial sectors with over fifteen patents, but his most lasting accomplishment is the impact he had on those around him. He had a genuine love of learning that made him both a wonderful listener and a fountain of knowledge. If you had a question about something, Sam probably knew the answer, and if he didnt, he would go looking for it. Sam had a great sense of humor and was often ready with a "dad joke." In his spare time, he loved fishing and all things mechanical, tinkering with cars and boats whenever he could. He was generous with his time and talents and was always available to help others. Everyone who knew Sam felt valued by him, which is a rare gift. He always had something kind to say about everyone he knew. Sam leaves behind a legacy of kindness, love, and generosity to those he knew and loved. He is dearly missed by his family and friends. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Richmond, VA. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Gulfside Healthcare Services Hospice Care or the Lewy Body Dementia Association.
