Donald Joseph Smith, 87, of Dade City, Florida, passed away on July 17, 2023. Donald is survived by his wife of 65 years, Inez Smith, and his 5 children, Donna, Laura, Cheryl, Jacqueline, and Dennis, as well as their spouses. A devoted grandfather, Donald was also blessed with 10 grandchildren, 6 step grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and 8 step great grandchildren.
Donald was born in North Bergen, NJ, on January 16, 1936, and raised in Guttenberg. He was the second child of 6 children born to Rose and Harold Smith. Donald is survived by 2 brothers, Harold and David, and 2 sisters, Dolores and Judith, and was predeceased by his brother Lawrence, as well as his parents and his granddaughter Brooke.
Donald graduated from St. Joseph's Catholic High School in 1954. He met his wife Inez in 1957 and they married on February 15, 1958, whereupon they moved to Jackson, NJ, in 1961. Donald and Inez resided and raised their family in Jackson until Donald's retirement from McGraw Hill Publishing Company in 1996. Upon his retirement, Donald and Inez moved to Florida, residing in Wesley Chapel and Dade City, for the remainder of his life.
Donald spent his entire 43-year career with McGraw Hill, where he was known as a hard worker, a strong manager and communicator, and a good friend to his co-workers.
Donald's career allowed him to realize his true passionshis devotion to his family and travel. Donald spent much of his free time outside of work supporting the activities of his family, as well as taking them on vacations that would lead him to explore the United States, as well as several foreign countries. As an avid traveler, Donald took his family and extended family and friends camping every year, all over the continental United States. His favorite destinations included Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; Walt Disney World, Orlando, Florida; and Cherrystone, Cape Charles, Virginia; just to name a few places he introduced his family to. In later years, Donald traded in the motorhome for cruise ships, which took him and Inez all over the world, including Italy, England, France, and Russia, as well as the Caribbean.
Donald will be remembered by his family as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, who always put them above career and personal accolades. His smile was always brightest when he was with his wife and family.
