Obituary

Daniel Louis Saltsman, Jr., 80, went home to be with the Lord on Oct. 7, 2013 at his home in Ridge Manor, Fla. Mr. Saltsman was born Aug. 5, 1933 in Birmingham, Ala. to Daniel Louis Saltsman, Sr. and Ora Tankersley Saltsman. He demonstrated a lifelong drive for achievement beginning as an Eagle Scout and an All-State football team player at West End High School. He graduated from the University of Alabama in 1956 where he was a member of the Delta Chi fraternity, serving as Vice President and President. He married Violet Cunningham in 1955 and spent two years in the Air Force as a fighter/bomber pilot. Following his term in the military, he worked as an accountant with two different companies prior to his graduation from the Birmingham School of Law. Mr. Saltsman was in private practice until 1969 when he became Vice President, Secretary and General Counsel of U.S. Pipe and Foundry Company. In 1972, Mr. Saltsman transferred to Tampa, Fla. as Vice President, Secretary and Head of the Legal Department for U.S. Pipe. Following a spiritual renewal with his Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ, Mr. Saltsman resigned from corporate life and put his many skills and abilities to work in full-time ministry as Executive Director of Little River Boys' Ranch. A member of First Baptist Church of Dade City, he served his church as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. At an age when many retire to a life of recreation and ease, Mr. Saltsmans joy was to remain active in ministry, working with Inmate Encounter, a Florida prison ministry; Lighthouse, an outreach of Loving Hands Ministries; Florida Baptist Children's Home; and Florida Baptist Disaster Relief. He participated in numerous mission trips in the U.S., Mexico, Sri Lanka, Honduras and Africa. Besides his ministry activities, Mr. Saltsman pursued real estate investments and raised goats, chickens and guardian dogs. Whatever work he did was done with intensity and an eye toward mentoring his children and grandchildren. Survivors include his beloved wife, Violet; four children: Daniel Louis, III (Rhonda), Valerie Balogh (John), Derek (Brandi), and Vicki Balogh (Glenn); sister, Gloria Whitlock of Birmingham; 17 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by their son, Michael Daryl. A memorial service to celebrate a life well lived will be held at First Baptist Church Dade City on Oct. 10 at 11a.m. Family will receive friends for visitation from 10:30am until service time. A graveside service and interment will follow at a later date at Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham, Ala. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his memory to The Florida Baptist Childrens Home, the Lighthouse Ministries or the Inmate Encounter Prison Ministry.
