Charles H Smith Jr, 91, passed away peacefully at the Rucki Hospice Rehab Home on Friday, August 1, 2025. Charles was born on September 28th,1933 in Hyannis, Massachusetts. He is survived by his beautiful wife of 38 years, Elizabeth Ann Mills-Smith, Son: Roger Smith of Alstead, NH, Stepsons: Fred (Sheila) Roose of Clearwater, FL, Jim (Bonnie) Roose of Zephyrhills, FL, Donald (Barbie) Roose of Bethel Park, PA. Grandchildren: Jasmine Arnhold of Old Town, FL, Mindy Welch of Georgetown, KY, Al Welch of Charlestown, NH, Dylan Smith of Orlando, FL, Kyle Smith of Alstead, NH, Bill Roose of Zephyrhills, FL, Ben Roose Zephyrhills, FL, Matt Roose of Clearwater, FL, Becky Roose of Clearwater, FL, Flora Roose of Clearwater, FL, Amanda (Chris) Vos of Ligonier, PA, Ashley (Steven) Costello of Pleasant Hills, PA; as well as many great grandchildren. Preceding in Death: Mother: Edna Shaw of New York NY, Father: Charles H Smith Sr. of South Wellfleet, MA, Daughter: Rose Smith of Lancaster, KY, and Grandson: Jesse Welch of Charleston, NH.
Charles joined the United States Army in January 1950 as an EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) Master. Serving in Vietnam and Korean wars, he defused booby traps on fallen soldiers allowing them to return home giving grieving families closure.
After receiving countless awards and achievements, including a Bronze Star, he retired as a highly decorated Master Sgt and began living his life to the fullest. Shortly after retiring from the Army, he followed his passion in woodworking and opened a small business and became an electrician among many other things.
Charles is best known for being extremely active in his community and church. Serving his communities both in Homosassa, FL and Lancaster, KY, he worked closely with youth ministry, volunteering his time and wood working skills for youth church camps.
Charles did not say much, but he showed his love in the way he lived every day. Whether it was lending a hand, sharing a quiet moment, or simply being there, his actions always spoke louder than words. He had a special place in his heart for his animals and found peace and joy in the outdoors.
Funeral Services will be held on August 9, 2025, at Cornerstone Baptist Church located at 5434 7th St, Zephyrhills, FL with the interment with full military honors at Bushnell - National Cemetery August 13, 2025, 12:30pm. In lieu of flowers please send donations to Cornerstone Baptist Church.
