Obituary

COOK, Bruce Layton, age 77, passed away at his home in Zephyrhills, FL on January 13, 2020. He was born on November 6, 1942 in Bristol, TN to parents David Layton Cook & Hazel Irene (Gillenwater) Cook.Bruce never met a person he didnt like, he always had a smile for everyone. He will be fondly remembered for his friendly demeanor and love of fun. When it came to having fun, Bruce loved going out to see a movie or attend a concert. He loved all types of music, everything from ABBA, Yanni, gospel, and everything in between. He especially loved Elvis Presleys music.Whether he was going to the beach or going fishing, Bruce loved the water. He was also an avid sports fan - especially when it came to the Carolina Tar Heels! Some of his favorite sports were bowling, tennis, and especially golf. In his younger years he was actually an ice skating instructor for some time.Bruce retired from Lykes Pasco Citrus after more than 20 years of service in sales, then went on to work another five years as a Purchasing Manager for GIvaudan Flavors. At the time he retired from Givaudan, his retirement letter read "It has been an exciting and rewarding segment of my working career. Now comes the time we all work for; more time with family, fishing and golf." Unfortunately, it wasnt to be. One year after his retirement, Bruce began a long lengthy battle of illnesses from cancer and, later, complications from COPD.Along with his parents, Bruce was preceded in death by an older sister, along with another sister and brother who were twins; a brother-in-law, a sister-in-law, and one niece. He leaves behind his loving wife of 38 years, Doris S. Cook; one daughter, Tamara Ferryman (Mike), one son, Derick Layton (Amy); two grandchildren, Nathan (Christy) and Isaac; two great-grandchildren: Taylor and Lucas Layton; one brother, Lee Allen Cook (Carolyn); one brother-in-law, Anthony L. "Tony" Skipper; four nieces: Angie Kirby, Tricia Kerr, Karen Wilson (Adam), and Monica Skipper; one nephew, David Allen Cook (Gina); his beloved parrot, Jocko; and many other friends and loved ones.A Celebration of Life will be held at 2pm on Sunday, January 19, 2020 at Hodges Family Funeral Home 301 Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
