Betty Jo McCabe passed away on Sunday, September 10, 2023, at the age of 81. Her peaceful death at home with family was her last wish. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 59 years Cornelius Mac McCabe, parents Marion and Viola Hormuth, her brother Fred Hormuth, and the heartbreaking death of her oldest son, Mark McCabe.
Betty is survived by her daughter Lisa Bessenger (Les), son James McCabe (Ana) and sisters Ana Lee Haas, Mary Wiggers and brother Tom Hormuth. Her remaining family includes grandchildren, Raven Thompson (Keonte), Morgan McCabe, Patrick McCabe, Marshall McCabe, Bowman Archibald, Garrett Archibald, great-grandson Kane Thompson, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Betty was born and raised in Evansville, Indiana, and attended The Academy of the Immaculate Conception where she was an accomplished pianist. She moved to Dade City Florida after graduation where her family owned and operated Peeks Motel. She attended and graduated from St Leo College in 1973 and continued her education at the University of South Florida graduating in 1976 with a master's degree in education. Betty began her career in education working with PreK and Head Start programs in Dade City. She taught English and assumed leadership roles at her beloved Pasco Middle School for decades.
Betty enjoyed many activities when away from the classroom. She enjoyed working with her husband in their abundant rose gardens, as well as the San Antonio Garden Club and numerous book clubs. Her favorite place to be was in and around the water.
She will be remembered for her confidence, positive nature in the face of harrowing medical diagnoses and compassion for others.
A private memorial ceremony will be held at a later date for the family.
