Obituary

Barbara Pierce Towe, 76, of Dade City, FL died peacefully on Sunday, April 19th, 2015 at her Home in The Highlands of Scotland Yard, Dade City, FL. Born October 19th, 1938 in Charlottesville, VA, she was the daughter of Molly (Melton) and Lewis Glass, both deceased. Barbara was widowed twice, preceded in death by Husband Albert Darden Towe, who passed in 1992; and Husband Elbert Donald Pierce, who passed in 1966; both retired Military. Barbara worked her entire career, in various occupations, at the University of Virginia, Darden School Foundation. She initially was employed as a Bookkeeper, while still attending Lane H.S., and ultimately retired as the VP of The Foundation and Treasurer of the Board of Trustees. This accomplishment marked the first time that a "non-college graduate" and Woman was elected to the Board of Trustees. Barbara, soon after graduating High School, married Donald Pierce, and was widowed for the first time, at 27 years old, with 2 young children (Sandra Lynn, 6 and Alan King, 4). After 3 Years, Barbara met and married "Santa Clause", Darden Towe, and had her third child, Victor. Forrest. Working tirelessly at the Foundation, Barbara (and Darden) always made time to take their Children to Church, the park, swimming, baseball, ballet, softball, tennis, football, fishing, Family Functions ("Us Nuts") and other local community, civic and UVA sporting events. Barbara and Darden never missed one of their children's home or away sporting events, recitals, plays, etc. Barbara was also very involved in various volunteer organizations, two of which were the Food Bank of the First United Methodist Church and as a Candy Striper at Martha Jefferson Hospital. While living in The Highlands (referred to by her Children as her "Year Round Summer Camp"), Barbara enjoyed retirement immensely playing Golf, MahJong, Bunco, Bingo, and Fishing; and was a member of the Highlands Sunshine and Hot Dog Committees. One of her most enjoyable activities was taking her Dog Ginny up on the Hill to the "Dog Park", and hosting dinner parties at her home, as well as, attending dinner parties and other functions at the Club House and her friend's homes. Survived `by Her Children, Daughter, Sandra Pierce Gillenwater and her Husband Michael of Fredericksburg, VA; Sons Alan Pierce and his Wife Kelly of Dade City, FL and Victor Towe, of Wesley Chapel, FL. Grandchildren: Lucas & Kelsey Gillenwater and Savannah & Corbin Pierce. Brother: Ed Glass (Peggy), of Dunellon, FL; Sisters: Becky Hyre of Myrtle Beach, SC and Lenora "Wimpy" King (Bill), of Harrisonburg, VA. Nephews: Curtis & Stanley Glass; G.L. & Kevin Kirby and Joe King; Aunt: Faye Davis; Numerous Cousins and Special Friends, as well as, her devoted and loving Ruby Red, Cavalier King Charles "Miss Ginny". Memorial Service will be held in Dade City at Hodges Funeral Home 11441 Hwy 301 from 2-4P, Monday April 20th. Additional services will be held at Charlottesville, VA at Hill & Wood Funeral Home (Visitation/Viewing) at 201 North First Street and First United Methodist Church (Funeral Service) at 101 E. Jefferson Street Dates/Times TBD, Officiated by The Reverend Alvin J. Horton and The Reverend Harry G. Kennon. Graveside Service will be held in Charlottesville at Monticello Memorial Gardens, at 670 Thomas Jefferson Parkway. For those attending either of these services, Barbara's Family, would like everyone to wear a touch of Red and/or our Nations Colors "Red, White & Blue".
