Barbara Anne Johnson peacefully passed away at Elevated Estates at the Edwinola in Dade City, Florida, on June 12, 2025.

Born in Fitzgerald, Georgia, she was the daughter of Ruby Lee (Herrin) Dougherty and Claude Dougherty. She grew up in Fitzgerald and remained close with extended family in nearby Waycross.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Johnson (2013), and is survived by her brother and her 3 children, 6 grandchildren and 6 greatgrandchildren.

She lived for many years in Bowie, Maryland (1965–1999), and later in Millsboro, Delaware (1999–2021), before moving to Florida.

Professionally, Barbara worked as a medical secretary at The George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C., until her retirement in the 1990s.

Barbara was a talented seamstress and often made clothing for her children and grandchildren with love and care. A talented soprano, Barbara sang in church choirs and performed solos of inspirational hymns. Her voice brought comfort and joy to those around her.

There will be a private interment held at Glen Abbey Memorial Gardens in Auburndale, Florida for Barbara's close family.

The USF Health Byrd Alzheimer's Center and Research Institute played a vital role in Barbara's journey. They not only provided a correct diagnosis but also helped the family understand and organize the best possible care. Their guidance, resources, and support groups made it possible for us to learn, adapt, and cope with the many challenges of Alzheimer's and dementia.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages memorial donations in Barbara's name to support Alzheimer's research at the Byrd Alzheimer's Center.
