Obituary

Audrey Elaine Lawler, Waldschmidt, Lazar, 97 passed away on May 26, 2021, in Zephyrhills Fl. Born in Bismarck, North Dakota, daughter of Margaret and Dr. Rubin Waldschmidt . Mother of Deborah Lazar and Nancy Lazar Williams; grandmother to Alexander Redden and Juliana Redden. She was preceded in death by her two sons, William Lazar III, Russell Lazar and her brother William Waldschmidt. She married radio and television announcer William T. Lazar in 1949. After the death of her husband in 1964 Audrey went back to school to earn her teaching degree in English. Later she worked in editing and design for several publishing houses. She continued to work and support her four children until the youngest was in college. Audrey came of age during the beginning of World War II, and after graduating from Bismarck High School in 1942, she went on to college at the University of Wisconsin in Madison to earn her BA in English. While there, she learned to fly an airplane! That was the beginning of a lifelong love for air flight and adventure. She became a stewardess for American Airlines, working out of New York and California. Her career in flying came to an end with the beginning of her family in the 1950s. In 1985 Audrey moved the family home of 32 years in Briarcliff Manor, NY to Tampa, FL with the hope of drawing her children there for their vacation time. She created a wonderful setting to gather and relax over the years. She was an avid gardener and loved all aspects of design. Her talents in design served her well as a member of several clubs including President of the Florida Gulf Coast Kiwis (former flight attendants), President of the Tampa Writers Alliance, a member of the Red Hat Ladies, and the Northdale Owls. She also worked for a time writing promotions at WEDU in Tampa. Audrey will be remembered most for her graceful movements, easy laughter and friendly interest in others. Her passion and activism in Democratic politics, sailing, love of her pets, and writing were some of the interests that sustained her in an active life for all of her 97 years. The memory of her enthusiasm in all things serves as the familys north star going forward. To the team of doctors and medical staff that worked with diligence and compassion on Audrey's behalf at Orchid Cove at Dade City and the Rucki Hospice Care Center in Zephyrhills, FL, our family is eternally grateful. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Doctors Without Borders (http://www.msf.org/) in Audreys memory. There will be no visitation. Audrey chose to be cremated, and her ashes will be interred at a date when the family can gather. An article Audrey wrote for her college alumni Magazine, On Wisconsin: titled "Flying Solo" https://onwisconsin.uwalumni.com/campus-news/flying-solo/
