Alfred Joseph "A.J." Ivie, Jr. passed away peacefully on July 2, 2024, at the age of 86.
Born in Atlanta, GA, on September 8, 1937, to Alfred "Joe" and Esther Ivie, his family relocated to Jacksonville, FL, where he spent his childhood. After graduating from Robert E. Lee High School in 1956, A.J. enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division. Following his discharge, he enrolled at the University of Florida where he met the love of his life, Janet (Creech) and graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering. He married Janet in 1963. Returning to U.F., he was accepted to the College of Law where he achieved his Juris Doctor shortly before becoming a father for the first time. He accepted a position with Boeing in Cocoa Beach, FL, that utilized his degrees. Desiring a career focused on law, he moved his growing family to Winter Haven and finally settling in Dade City. He was employed by the E.B. Larkin Law office until he was able to open his own private practice. It was here that he was most content in his work until his retirement due to health issues in 2004.
Active in the community, A.J. was a distinguished past President of the Kiwanis Club and past President of Heritage Arts Association. He was long time member of the First Presbyterian Church of Dade City and served as Deacon, Elder, Clerk of Session and Commissioner of 195th General Assembly. An avid golfer and member of several local courses, he thoroughly enjoyed his time on the fairway with friends. A diehard Gator fan, A.J. loved to follow the University of Floridas football, baseball, basketball and golf teams. He never missed an opportunity to wear the Orange and Blue.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Janet, and their children Susan (Mark) Teter-Jones, Sarah (Jeff) Jeter, Sharon (Jeff) Phillips, and Joe (Jennifer) Ivie; his grandchildren, Joshua Jones, Julia (Eddie) Leonard, Jacob Teter-Jones, Jenna (Justin) Weeks, Jude Teter, Isaac Jeter, Harrison Phillips, Megan Phillips, Joey (Alexis) Ivie, Andrew (Alyssa) Ivie, Abraham Ivie, and Abel (Maya) Ivie; nine great-grandchildren; sisters Perry Roussel and Emily (Michael) Muzos; brother Glenn (Trish) Ivie; and many nieces and nephews. A.J. was preceded in death by his mother, father, son-in-law Larry Jones and granddaughter Jordan Ivie.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Gulfside Hospice.
