Obituary

Mavis Dean, aged 80, went peacefully home to be with our Lord at sunrise on Sunday, November 19, 2017. Mavis had a heart of pure gold. She was a remarkably strong, loving and original woman with the sweetest disposition imaginable, particularly given the hardships she faced in her well-lived life. Mavis had a quick smile and the ability make people instantly comfortable with her goodness and candor. Many will remember this descendant of Floridas pioneering Whidden/Ellerbe family for her devoted service to others in the workplace. Mavis worked for years at many Dade City restaurants, from the E & M and George & Gladyss to the Valencia and Club Iola. Mavis was a proud Pasco High graduate, and last worked as a clerk at the San Ann BP for 18 years, where she was beloved by her customers. She spent most of her life in and around Dade City, where she brought two fine children, Alfred and Patty, into the world. She lived briefly in Marco Island and Texas, but always returned home, where her parents, Emery and Lenora Hughes had a productive farm and citrus operation in Richland. Mavis was predeceased by her parents, her brother, Joseph Kevin Hughes (Wanda) of Lakeland, sister Shirley Faye Hughes, son Alfred Maxie Fillman, as well as her husbands, Maxie Fillman and David Dean. Mavis was a devoted Christian, and loved to hear and tell stories about her family. Mavis is survived by her loving daughter Patty Fillman (Brenda) of Birmingham, AL, her brother Gene Hughes (Charlotte) of Opelika, AL, sisters Mary Frances Mullins (Bob) of Tallahassee, FL, Joan Waldron (George), of Mobile, AL, and Judy Williams (Jerry), of Clinton, MS. Mavis also leaves in the care of our Lord three grandchildren, Kevin Fillman, Chad Fillman and Mary Fillman, and great-grandchildren Elizabeth and Riley Fillman, as well as dozens of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, former colleagues and dear friends. Services to celebrate the life of our sweet Mavis will be conducted by Hodges Family Funeral Home, at 14046 5th St. in Dade City, on Wednesday, November 22, 2017 at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made in Maviss name to Royal Oak Nursing Center or the Disabled American Veterans. The family also wishes to express their gratitude to a special couple who cared for Mavis, Al and Louise "Lilly" Hollingshead. Memorial Service
